The Kaplan ACT preparation textbook called it an “MIT legend.” Others traced an early version to a 1958 American humor book. The Saturday Review reprinted Calandra’s essay in 1968, spreading it to a massive new audience.
The story jumped genres entirely. It appeared in books about teaching, writing skills, workplace counseling, real estate investment, chemical industry practices, computer programming, and integrated circuit design. Each field found something different in it. Something that spoke to their own anxieties about rigid thinking.
Why did it spread so far? Because it touched something deeply uncomfortable. The story isn’t really about a barometer. It’s about the terrifying gap between intelligence and compliance. The student was clearly brilliant. The system nearly failed him anyway.
